Liberty Distance Corps Stars at Shamrock

The Liberty men's and women's distance runners found the track at Coastal Carolina to their liking Friday at the Shamrock Invitational. Evans Kigen ran to victory in the men's 3,000-meter final, and the women's distance medley relay quartet crossed the line first, marking two of the day's highlights.
Kigen (So., Eldoret, Kenya) cruised to first place in his Liberty outdoor track debut. His 8:35.09 clocking for 3,000 meters left him nearly seven seconds in front of his nearest competitor.
The Lady Flames' distance medley relay squad also won comfortably, running an 11:49.20 to defeat runner-up Miami (Ohio) by 10 seconds. The squad consisted of Rebekah Ricksecker (Jr., Laurel, Del.), Charlene Hibbert (Sr., Mississauga, Ontario), Sarah Roberts (Sr., Zieglerville, Pa.) and Kati Albright (Fr., Wake Forest, N.C.). Friday's performance makes them the third-fastest squad in program history.
One more notable distance effort came courtesy of senior Carol Jefferson (Schwenksville, Pa.). She netted the women's 3,000-meter runner-up honor with a personal-best time of 10:06.81. The Keystone State native is now the race's No. 4 all-time performer in program history.
Liberty also fared quite well in the men's hammer throw, as seniors Jon Hart (Wyomissing, Pa.) and Clendon Henderson (Meadow, Texas) placed second and fourth in the event, respectively. Hart's 209-10 throw, more than a six and a half improvement upon his best effort at last weekend's Coastal Carolina Invitational, makes him the early leader on the NCAA national performance list.
Meanwhile, Henderson competed exactly one week after wrapping up his indoor track & field season
by throwing the shot put at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. The senior's best heave on the day, a 189-9, set a new personal best and qualified him for May's NCAA East Regional Championships.
In the preliminary round of the men's 110-meter hurdles, Matt Parker (Jr., Rome, N.Y.) posted the sixth-fastest time, earning a berth in Saturday's final. His 14.41 effort established a new personal best and puts him into a tie with Ken Howell as the third-fastest high hurdler in Liberty history.
Freshman Jacey Bailey (Tamarac, Fla.) shaved .07 seconds off his personal best at 100 meters, qualifying sixth for the final in 10.83.
Liberty will close out its stay in the Myrtle Beach area Saturday, when the Flames and Lady Flames compete in the final day of the Shamrock Invitational. The first block of field events and the women's 5,000-meter run are slated to begin at 10 a.m.
