Shepherd Awarded ECAC Weekly Honor
2/28/2008 12:00:00 AM | Track and Field
For the second time this season, a freshman on the Liberty men's track & field team has been recognized by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Pole vaulter Kolby Shepherd is this week's ECAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Shepherd's (Dublin, Ga.) honor follows that of classmate Jacey Bailey (Fr., Tamarac, Fla.), the ECAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week on Feb. 14. With Shepherd's award, Liberty men's track & field performers have won five ECAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week distinctions this season. Jon Hart (Sr., Wyomissing, Pa.) and Clendon Henderson (Sr., Meadow, Texas) have been both been recognized twice.
Shepherd earned the award by pole vaulting 16-2.75, last Saturday at the Virginia Tech Challenge, to set a Liberty freshman record and win the "B" section of the men's pole vault. His IC4A qualifying clearance added nearly a foot to his previous personal best. The freshman now ranks No. 4 on Liberty's all-time performance list.
Shepherd has established himself as the favorite to win the pole vault at the New Balance Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, to be held in Clemson, S.C., this Friday and Saturday. The men's pole vault is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m.
