Liberty junior Jon Hart broke his own school record in the hammer on his way to a fifth-place finish at the 80th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, Thursday in Austin, Texas. His effort highlighted the Flames' day two performances, which also included Arlene Zelinskas' provisional qualification to the national meet in the heptathlon.
Hart (Wyomissing, Pa.) threw 207-3, improving his previous best of 204-7 set earlier this season at the Shamrock Invitational. His effort represents the best mark posted by a Big South athlete this year, passing Radford's Jeremiah Spence, who placed eighth during Thursday's competition. Also competing for the Flames in the hammer was Clendon Henderson (Jr., Meadow, Texas). He placed 15th with a top throw of 181-2. All of them chased event champion Egor Agafonov of Kansas, who threw 223-4 to win by 11 inches.
Zelinskas (Sr., Dayton, Ohio), in 11th place after the opening day of the heptathlon, finished in the same position after tallying a career-high 5,123 points. Now the No. 2 all-time performer at Liberty, Zelinskas exceeded the NCAA national provisional qualifying standard of 5,050. Her best mark prior to Thursday had been a 5,000-point effort, achieved a year ago.
Another Flame who achieved a lifetime best on Thursday was Tim O'Donnell (Jr., Hurst, Texas), in the 400-meter hurdles. O'Donnell broke the 52-second barrier for the first time in his career, crossing the finish line in 51.87. He failed to qualify for Saturday's final, but finished 15th out of 69 entrants.
Liberty's final athlete in action during Thursday's session was Daniel Newell (So., Roanoke, Va.). He finished 16th in the decathlon with a final point total of 6,066.
The third of four days of competition at the Texas Relays will commence at 10:30 a.m. Eastern, Friday morning. O'Donnell and Matt Parker (So., Rome, N.Y.) will compete in the 110-meter hurdles during the morning session. Henderson will have a busy afternoon, throwing both the shot put and discus, and Hart will join him in the shot put.
