Several Liberty men's and women's track and field athletes braved unseasonably cool weather conditions and got one final tune-up for this coming week's Big South Championships, Saturday in the Lynchburg College Track & Field Classic at newly renovated Shellenberger Field. Sophomore Rebekah Ricksecker was able to run the fastest 800-meter time by a Big South athlete this season, 2:13.33, at the meet.
Liberty was originally slated to attend Saturday's James Madison Invitational, but the coaching staff noted the weather forecast and decided not to risk injury to the athletes so close to the conference meet. A select few athletes decided to travel across town to compete at Lynchburg College, and all who did so returned with successful results.
Ricksecker (Laurel, Del.), 10 seconds ahead of the rest of the 800-meter runners, clocked her season-best effort in the race. Her time was .03 seconds faster than that of the previous conference leader, High Point's Sumiyya Hunter. Ricksecker also resides atop the Big South performance list in the 1,500 meters, with a time of 4:37.24.
Ricksecker was the only Lady Flame in action on Saturday, but the Liberty men's athletes combined for two event titles and a pair of runner-up finishes. Nate Edwards (Jr., Warren, Mich) and Josh Edmonds (Fr., Cooperstown, N.Y.) went 1-2 in the men's 5,000 meters in times of 15:43.33 and 15:43.69, respectively. For Edmonds, it was his first race since the World Junior Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, Kenya on March 24.
Tim O'Donnell (Jr., Hurst, Texas) was Liberty's other winner on the afternoon, finishing two seconds clear of the 400-meter hurdle field. His winning time was 53.46 seconds. Meanwhile, Steve Barrett (Jr., Thornton, W.Va.) finished as the discus runner-up, throwing 131-5.5.
Liberty's track athletes will return to action when they, for the first time since 2001, host the New Balance Big South Track & Field Championships Presented by UCS. The three-day event at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex will commence Thursday at noon with the decathlon 100-meter dash.
