
Newell Leads Heptathlon After Day One Of Liberty Kickoff

Liberty sophomore Daniel Newell enjoyed a successful opening day of the heptathlon Friday evening at the Liberty Kickoff Invitational. Newell tallied 2,865 points in the first four events and carries a 232-point lead into the second day of the season-opening meet at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center.
Newell (Roanoke, Va.) was the top finisher in each of the first three events, running the 60-meter dash in 7.06 seconds, long jumping 6.52 meters and heaving the shot put 12.42 meters.
The Flames' Clarence Murray (Jr., Birdsboro, Pa.) paced all competitors in the high jump with a leap of 1.88 meters. That effort propelled Murray into second place with 2,633 points.
Joel Beck (Fr., Leola, Pa.) gave Liberty control of the top three spots in the day one standings, totaling 2,602 points.
The second day of the Liberty Kickoff will begin with the men's weight throw at 9 a.m. The women's pentathlon 60-meter hurdles will mark the first track event, at 11 a.m.
